(AMD)

AMD K7 SPECmarks: AMDs Athlon is not a weak performer, as the Intel competitor shows with some benchmarks. Using SPECint95 the K7/550 shows a 9% advantage over the Intel Pentium III/550, the K7/600 is 18% faster (than PIII/550); SPECfp95 is even higher, K7 finished them 46% and 53% faster (all CPUs were running with 512k L2 cache; floating point tests like SPECfp95 are heavily influenced by the bus clock speed). The 3D performance was measured using the 3D WinBench 99 (v1.2) where Athlon was 40% and 48% faster than the PIII/550. AMD did not publish absolute scores (Pentium III/550 = 100%) and the bar charts are not shown correctly, they start at 80% or 90% instead of 0% and visually exaggerate the advantage of Athlon.
Interpolating the SPECmarks of Pentium III/550 (22.3/15.1): The K7/550 should get about 24.3 SPECint95 and about 22.0 SPECfp95, at 600 MHz the scores should be 26.3 and 23.1. The fastest PowerPC 750 (G3) running at 466 MHz (233 MHz cache, 83 MHz bus) gets low scores of 21.8 and 12.6 - but note this: The G3/450/225/100 gets 21.4 and 13.8, that's 9.5% more fp-score with a faster bus and despite 3.6% slower CPU clock. The G4/450 is said to have both SPECmarks around 20. Note that the current SPECmarks are already 4 years old and are not adequate for todays computer architectures anymore, they do not take care of new cache systems or extensions like MMX, 3DNow! or AltiVec. Besides, SPECmark2000 is in the works. (AMD)

(TechWeb, AMD)

AMD K7: AMD now ships the long awaitet Pentium III rival K7 "Athlon". This processor is now available, but AMD did not specify which clock speeds this includes. Officially the K7 (0.25micron) will come initially at speeds of 500, 550 and 600 MHz. Athlon features 128k of L1 cache, a large programmable L2 cache (512k to 8MB) and a 200 MHz system bus based on the protocol from Alpha EV6 processor with support for scalable multiprocessing. Because the K7 offers server level price and performance the K6 processor family will be continued too. AMD also announced it expects a loss of about 200 million US$ for this quarter, mostly caused through the price war against Intel. (TechWeb, AMD)

(SF Chronical)

More on the EggPC: The 800 US$ iMac copy shown by the eight month old FuturePower (see Macinfo 24.6.) will be called E-Power. In contrast to the iMac it features a floppy drive and an expansion slot (as well as 40X CD-ROM, 56k modem, 10/100Mbit ethernet, 2 USB ports). E-Power is scheduled for early September and will come in the five colors sapphire, amethyst, emerald, ruby and topaz. According to SF Chronical, the "E-Power exhibit, sitting in the shadow of the huge Compaq booth, attracted scant attention from the PC-centric crowd." Future Power executives said they don't think that their design will infringe on any of Apple's intellectual property. (SF Chronical)

iMac vs. EggPC: We knew this would happen sooner or later. Now it happened. At the PC-Expo the unknown (?) PC manufacturer FuturePower showed an iMac copy (in german the pronunciation of the english "i" from "iMac" is equal to our word for egg). The machine sells for 799 US$, features a 400 MHz Celeron processor (Pentium II core), 64MB RAM, 6.4GB harddisk and is available in several colors (of course semitransparent including mouse and keyboard). The german news magazine c't has a picture of the, well, so "innovative" copy (clone would not be the right word). Sorry. (c't)

(cnet, Alpha Processor Incorporated, 1100 MHz PowerPC)

1 GHz Alpha: Alpha Processor Incorporated (API) and Samsung have shown a computer running a 1000 MHz fast Alpha processor at the PC Expo. In contrast to the GigaHertz prototypes shown by Intel and AMD earlier this year the Alpha chip did not need a special cooling system (in February 1998 IBM already showed a 1.1 GHz PowerPC prototype heating up to only 25 degrees celsius). In July the Alpha 21264 (now available for new slot B) running at 750 MHz will ship, 1000 MHz are planned for mid 2000. (cnet, Alpha Processor Incorporated, 1100 MHz PowerPC)

MHz 1993 - 1999: We've created a timeline chart on CPU clock speed including the most known processors for MacOS and Windows: PowerPC, Pentium family, AMD (Intel competitor, in the chart starting with K5 processor), DEC Alpha (now Compaq). The fastest MHz increase was shown by AMD, the PowerPC and Pentium show a head to head race, and Alpha is still running at highest clock speeds. Note the following when comparing two different CPU types: The chart shows clock speed in MHz, higher values do not always mean better performance for that CPU type (for the same CPU type more MHz is better, of course).

(MacGadget, Gravis)

G3/500: The german news service MacGadget has informations on an adjustable 500 MHz G3 upgrade from Gravis (german Mac sales company and former Mac cloner). The upgrade will be available for DM 1999 starting end of July. It can be used in all Macs and clones with Tsunami, Nitro or TNT board (PowerMacs 73-9600 etc.). The chip will be a new G3 processor from IBM that supports a CPU : bus ratio of up to 10.0, this allows 500 MHz CPU speed while running the "standard" 50 MHz bus in those machines. Current G3 processors support up to multiplier 8.0 which gives 400 MHz at 50 MHz bus. Gravis could boost the upgrade to 520 MHz when installed in one of their TT Pro machines (Umax Pulsar clone). Yosemite ohne G4? (AppleInsider)

Yosemite without G4? According to AppleInsider the recent Firmware update for blue&white G3 Macs installs an additional processor check routine that disbales booting on Yosemite machines with a G4 upgrade installed. AppleInsider rumors this was done to prevent third party from shipping G4 upgrades before Apple has released its Power Macintosh G4 series (codenamed Sawtooth), at a later time Apple could post a patch to remove this restriction. Officially the update was released to fix some PCI problems. The current G3 series (350 to 450 MHz) ships with this Firmware installed, the older Gossamer G3 Macs (beige) don't have a FlashROM and will most likely run G4 upgrades. (AppleInsider)

AMD K6-2-P 400: Now AMD closed up in Mobile Computing, it's K6-2-P is available now at a clock speed of 400 MHz. Intels Pentium II MObile and Celeron Mobile are also available at a speed of 400 MHz; and Apples PowerBooks feature the same speed (while the 400 MHz PowerPC 750 is available for nearly a year now and consumes less power than the mobile chips from Intel and AMD). Be aware that different architectures running at the same clock speed do not perform equally.

(EETimes, MacNN)

New IBM PowerPC processors ready soon? At the VLSI Technology Symposium in Kyoto (Japan) IBM announced they were in the final stage of debugging SOI technology for processors. "Silicon On Insulator" isolates the circuits from the silicon substrate, this lowers power consumtion and produces less heat, overall it incerases the switching speed between transistors. At the same clock speed processors using SOI are said to be 30% faster than copper based chips without SOI. According to EETimes IBM will possibly ship SOI processors to Apple within the next 2 or 3 months, and it will use SOI chips in its own server series. First the chips will be manufactured in 0.22 micron process, a GigaHertz PowerPC (0.18 micron) is already in development. Insider believe that IBM will ship SOI processors (G3) running at lower clock speed to Apple soon, but they will perform better than higher clocked chips (G3) without SOI.
IBM also showed a paper describing a 670 MHz 64Bit PowerPC processor. This chip will combine copper and SOI technologies. It features 34 million transistors, 256k L1 cache (the 604e and G3 only have 64k, the Pentium II and III 32k L1) and 104x 16kBit L2 director caches. At a core voltage of 1.8 Volt the 139 mm2 chip consumes 24 Watts.
IBM has not yet officially announced any SOI products. (EETimes, MacNN)

(Publish, MacNN)

G3/400 vs. SGI Pentium III/500: The online magazine Publish RGB site compared a PowerMac G3/400 to a Silicon Graphics SGI Visual Workstation 320 (Pentium III/500, Windows NT 4.0) running PhotoShop. On the hardware side the Mac was a bit disadvantaged (128 vs. 256MB RAM; 7200 vs. 10'000rpm harddisk; 400 vs. 500 MHz), but it performed almost equal to the SGI: The PIII machine finished all tests in 179 seconds, the Mac in 185 (+ 3.3%). Some tasks which have MMX optimized code (unclear whether this means MMX2 from Pentium III or older MMX instructions) ran up to 70% faster on the SGI, other tasks (among them was scrolling the image) the Mac was twice as fast. Overall a head to head race. Note: The PowerMac G3 is also available with a 450 MHz fast CPU, while the newest PIII runs at 550 MHz - and the SGI offers the option to add a second CPU. Yosemite-Overclocking & Benchmarks

Yosemite overclocking: We tested different CPU und bus speed settings on the G3 b&w Yosemite motherboard. This tuning method, changing the jumpers on the board, requires to remove the warranty seal, thus it may not be a good idea for everyone to do it. Depending on the parts in your machine your tuning success may vary. Our G3/350 for example did not boot at 400 MHz, so our benchmarks include only speed settings between 350 and 378 MHz (the next possible speed level below 400 MHz), but there are 5 different bus speeds (66.7 to 120 MHz) and 1 higher cache clocking (350/100 standard with 3:2 cache). Wallstreet G3 Upgrade?

MacOS X Server is fast: The NewMedia Magazine did a webserver comparison: a Pentium II/400 running Windows NT (IIS), a Sun SPARCstation with 2x 200 MHz running Solaris (Netscape Enterprise Server) and a G3/400 running MacOS X Server (Apache). NT did 25 transactions per second, Solaris did 60 and MacOS X Server did 190, thats 7 times the perfomance of NT and 3 times as fast as Solaris. The tests were run from 20 to 100 users (clients). Note that 2 processors running at 200 MHz do not (in general) reach the perfomance of one "equal" processor running at 400 MHz, and a Pentium II is not as fast as a PowerPC G3 at the same clock speed. This does not change the magnitude of the comparison very much though. (MacNN, contribution from Ian Bruce, NewMedia)
