Wer deshalb die Aktion "I Have A Dream" und damit auch die Macintosh Produktfamilie unterstützen will, erfährt alles weitere unter folgender Adresse: I Have A Dream

I Have A Dream: In the german part of Europe Bertram Haller, member of the MacGuardians, is trying to get something like Apples DEMO DAYS running. He's looking for people willing to get some education by Apple and then present the Mac in big shopping malls etc. to the people -- typically the sales people in these locations have no idea about the Mac. Apple doesn't support the efforts very much, therefore the project could need your help. Go to the following address (page in german) to find out how you can help: I Have A Dream (german)

(AMD)

AMD Athlon with 133 MHz DDR SDRAM: Intel competitor AMD introduced a DDR SDRAM interface (Double Data Rate) for its K7/New Athlon processor. At 100 MHz FSB (Front Side Bus) the DDR interface transfers up to 1.6 GB/s (800 MB/s without DDR), this is why the official name for these memory modules is PC1600 (they're also called PC-200, as the "double PC-100"). At 133 MHz FSB up to 2.1 GB/s can be transfered (therefore the name PC2100 or PC-266, the latter in the meaning of "twice PC-133"). The 100 MHz DDR interface is available for the Athlon 850, 900, 950, 1000, 1100 and 1200 while the 133 MHz comes for the 1.0, 1.133 (new) and 1.2 GHz Athlons. Old SDRAM modules (non DDR) cannot be combined with the new AMD-760 chipset. Of course the DDR SDRAM doesn't boost the computer to twice its speed, first benchmarks showed a performance gain of 3-5%.

MHz History Chart: We've updated our MHz History Chart and added a numeric table. You can clearly see how AMD started making Intels life a nightmare some months ago -- even the Alpha processor which used to be the clock speed king some years ago has missed the boat. The PowerPC family, which was introduced as flexible architecture 7 years ago has completely lost the game and really needs to catch up with the competition.

(XLR8yourMac, Bare Feats)

ATI Radeon 256: ATIs new graphics processor is now also available for the Mac, currently only in an AGP version (for G4 Macs with AGP graphics, Sawtooth motherboard). The two online magazines Accerelate Your Mac! and Bare Feats have reviewed the new ATI chip (board). In 2D drawing speed the 256bit Radeon is almost comparable to its predecessor Rage 128 Pro (AGP), but since the results vary from application to application there's obviously big room for optimized drivers. King of 2D drawing speed is the ProFormance3 (Plus) from Formac. In the 3D world the Radeon clearly beats the Rage 128 (mileage varies from app to app). And in 3D games the massively higher fill rate is noticable, this means the frame rate drops only marginally when switching to higher screen resolutions -- the Rage 128 almost breaks down on higher res. The 3Dfx VooDoo5 5500 (33 MHz PCI version reviewed) shows comparable 3D scores while the fill rate seems to be even a bit higher compared to the Radeon (frame rate stays more constants over resolutions). Overall the reviewers are happy with ATIs new pixelmeister, this includes DVD and movie playback. (XLR8yourMac, Bare Feats)

(AMD)

AMD K7/Thunderbird ships at 1.2 GHz: AMD is shipping its 1.2 GHz Athlon successor Thunderbird (officially used product name is still "K7/Athlon"). This means AMD has now a 200 MHz clock speed advantage over competitor Intel, whose Pentium III/1133 had to be removed from market because of some errata, the 1.0 GHz PIII is currently Intels fastest processor. It looks similar in the low end market: The AMD Duron chip runs at up to 800 MHz while Intels Celeron offers 700 MHz maximum. Very interesting are the prices: The Thunderbird sells for 612 US$, 460, 350, 282, 215 and 193 US$ (1.2, 1.1 and 1.0 GHz, 950, 900 and 850 MHz) while Intel offers the 1.0 GHz PIII for 669 US$ (348 US$ the PIII/850) -- the AMD Duron costs 170, 112 and 88 US$ at speeds of 800, 750 and 700 MHz (all prices in 1000 unit quantities). Intel hopes to get back the speed crown with its Pentium 4 processor, due November 20th. (AMD)

Met@box joeCARD and MacOS X: According to the german hardware maker Met@box their joeCARD Z G3 and G4 (ZIF socket) for the beige and b&w G3 Macs and the very first G4 Mac (PCI graphics card) are fully compatible with MacOS X DP4 und Public Beta. The joeCARD Z G4 with 2MB of backside cache requires a kernel extension to activate the 2nd MB of cache. In Q1/2001 there will be a kernel extension available that activates the backside cache of the littleJoe, joeCARD G3 and joeCARD G4 for PCI Macs having a CPU slot (7300-9600 and clones) -- currently these upgrades run with the cache deactivated under MacOS X. The joeCARD T und littleJoe T are not compatible with OS X since the motherboards of the respective machines (Tanzania, Tanzania II -- PowerMac 4400 and clones) are not supported, therefore it's unlikely that these systems will ever run under the new Apple OS. The motherboards Gossamer, Yosemite and Yikes (beige and b&w G3 Mac, very first G4 Mac) are supported by MacOS X. Tsunami, Nitro and TNT (PowerMacs 7300-9600 and clones) are supported only inofficially, it's possible that these systems will have problems under the final MacOS X or one of its successors. (cnet, Heise)

Motorola G4 V'Ger und Apollo: At the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose (California) Motorola demoed the G4 "Apollo" processor, which is supposed to break the 1 GHz barrier. It is not know when this chip will ship in volume, and Apple did not yet confirm they will use it in future Macs. Apollo is based on the "V'Ger" G4+ processor shown last year (700 MHz prototype) -- Motorola also hasn't set a date when V'Ger is supposed to hit the market. The new G4 is something like a V'Ger manufactured using IBMs SOI technology, having "L1 Cache Way Locking" and treating the (optional) L3 cache as high speed memory. Compared to current chips the processors using SOI (Silicon On Insulator) allow for higher clock rates at the same level of power consumption or reduced power consumption at the same clock rate (solutions between these two are possible, of course). According to cnet Motorola has been able, using SOI in their chip, to increase the performance by 22% (while keeping the power consumtion on a constant level) and could, on the other side, reduce the power consumption by 30% while running at the same clock rate. The german Heise Newsticker posted numbers on Apollos power consumtion: 10 Watts at 666 MHz, 23 Watts at 1 GHz -- that could become a bit of a problem for Apples mobile computers, since current G3 processors consume 4 to 5 Watts only: the battery life will be reduced by some amount of time. (cnet, Heise (german))

(Sun Microsystems)

Sun at 900 MHz: The Unix workstation and server maker Sun Microsystems has introduced its long awaited next 64bit processor: Running at 600, 750 and 900 MHz the UltraSPARC III is up to twice as fast concerning clock rate compared to its predecessor UltraSPARC II (480 MHz max). The new chip can scale to hundreds of processors in a single machine, and each processor can run at its own clock rate ("frequency isolation"). An interesting detail: The UltraSPARC III features Copper instead of Aluminium interconnects. (Sun Microsystems)

(Intel)

Intel Pentium III Mobile at 850 MHz: Intel offers its Pentium III processor for portable computers new at speeds of 800 and 850 MHz (650 and 700 MHz in battery saving mode), while the low-cost chip Celeron Mobile is available at 700 MHz. It seems Apple is missing the boat also in the mobile market: The fastest PowerBook runs a G3/500 processor (400 MHz in the slower PowerBook), while the iBook (Special Edition) has recently been upgraded to a G3/466 chip (366 MHz in the standard iBook). (Intel)

95 US$ zu erwerben (in Mengen ab 10'000 Stück). (Yahoo)

New G4 processor: Just before Motorola will present its G4 Plus processor (design stage finished) at the Microprocessor Forum on October 10th it has introduced a new G4 chip: The MPC 7410 (current G4 Macs feature the PowerPC 7400) will debut at 400, 450 and 500 MHz (thus no faster than the 7400) and should have a significantly dropped power consumption. Obviously the chip targets the Embedded market, and the price is relatively cheap: 195 US$ for the 500 MHz chip, 135 and 95 US$ for the two slower models (in quantities of 10'000). (Yahoo)
