Pentium 4 Ende Jahr Marktführer: Laut dem Heise Newsticker will Intel Ende diesen Jahres ihren bisherigen Marktführer Pentium III durch den Pentium 4 ablösen. Der PIII ist derzeit mit maximal 1.133 GHz erhältlich, der Pentium 4 erreicht bereits 1.8 GHz und soll bis Ende 2001 über 2 GHz erklimmen. Preislich werden Pentium 4 Rechner dadurch billiger dass Intel den i845 Chipsatz ("Brookdale") mit Unterstützung für PC-133 SDRAM anbietet -- im Vergleich zum i850 mit Rambus RDRAM sollen damit aber zwischen 6 bis 20% Leistung eingebüsst werden, und besonders stark ist Intels Neuer trotz seiner hohen Taktraten ja nicht gerade. Den Pentium III wird es aber dennoch eine Weile geben, denn für Notebooks ist der Pentium 4 noch nicht ausgelegt. (Heise Newsticker)

Pentium 4 market leader end of this year: According to a Heise Newsticker (german) article Intel plans to replace its market leader Pentium III with the new Pentium 4 processor by the end of this year. The PIII is currently running at a maximum clock speed of 1.133 GHz while the Pentium 4 already reached 1.8 GHz, and it will be above 2 GHz by the end of 2001. Machines featuring a Pentium 4 processor will get cheaper with Intels new i845 chipset ("Brookdale") which connects to PC-133 SDRAM -- but compared to the i850 with Rambus RDRAM this results in 6 to 20% performace loss, and we all know the Pentium 4 is no strong performer, despite its very high clock speed. Korrektur PowerMac L3 Cache: Der neue PowerMac G4/733 besitzt im Gegensatz zum G4/867 und G4/800x2 -- entgegen unserer gestrigen Angabe -- kein L3 Cache, wohl aber 64k L1 und 256k L2 Cache onchip (beide bei vollem Prozessortakt).

Correction PowerMac L3 cache: The new PowerMac G4/733 doesn't have L3 cache, in contrast to the G4/867 and G4/800x2 (yesterday we mentioned it to have 1MB L3 cache). It still features 64k L1 and 256k L2 cache onchip like the other machines.

Schnellere Prozessoren von Intel: Chipgigant Intel hat zwei neue Versionen des Pentium 4 Prozessors eingeführt: Der 1.6 GHz schnelle Chip füllt die Lücke des bisher mit 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 und 1.7 GHz angebotenen Pentium 4, die 1.8 GHz schnelle Variante erweitert das Spektrum nach oben.
Auch den Low End Prozessor Celeron gibt es nun in einer schnelleren Ausführung: Mit 900 MHz erreicht Intels kostengünstiger Mikrochip aber immer noch nicht die Taktrate von AMDs Konkurrenzprodukt Duron (950 MHz). Faster processors from Intel: Chipzilla has introduced two new versions of the Pentium 4 processor: The 1.6 GHz chip completes the line of the 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.7 GHz fast Pentium 4, the 1.8 GHz processor extends the clock speed range.
Also the low end chip Celeron has been accelerated, however, running at a maximum of 900 MHz it still doesn't reach the clock speed of AMDs competitor Duron (950 MHz). The Celeron Mobile now runs at up to 850 MHz, concerning clock speed it has now reached the level of the AMD Duron Mobile. (Intel)
