(Intel)

Intel Pentium 4-M reaches 2.0 GHz: While Apples fastest laptops have just reached 800 MHz a few weeks ago, Intel based notebooks are now running at up to 2.0 GHz. The chip is supported by 512k onchip L2 cache ("Nortwood" core). To save battery power Apples PowerBook G4/800 can be downclocked to 667 MHz, Intels SpeedStep technology allows the same down to 1.2 GHz.
Intel also introduced the Celeron Mobile running at 1.33 GHz (old PIII core "Tualatin-128") and 1.4 and 1.5 GHz (small Northwood Pentium 4 core with 128k onchip L2 cache) -- the Celeron for desktop computers is already based on the Pentium 4 core ("Willamette", with 128k L2) and is running at 1.7 GHz. (AMD)

AMD Athlon MP with 1.733 GHz: AMDs processor with multiprocessing support, the Athlon MP, has reached 1.733 GHz ("QuantiSpeed" 2100+) -- the naming "MP" may be missleading since there is no chipset that can connect more than two (= dual) Athlons, even though the processor itself would be able to do. In contrast to the Athlon XP, which is not released for dualprocessing, the MP is still based on the older "Palomino" core. The K7 XP used the Palomino core (0.18µm) up to 1.733 GHz and was then moved to "Thoroughbred" (0.13µm), whose biggest advantage is the smaller process which reduces power consumption and head production. AMD is using a more complex validation procedure for the MP processors to ensure real multiprocessing support, that's why -- at the same clock speed -- the price is a bit higher than for its XP brother: The 2100+ (1.733 GHz) for example costs 28 US$ more, that's 262 US$ (OEM pricing). (PowerLogix, Newer Technology)

Processor upgrades for PowerBook G3 FireWire (Pismo): For the year 2000 PowerBook, codenamed "Pismo", there were no processor upgrades available because the CPU is soldered on a "Personality Daughtercard" which is only available to Apple (not to third party developers). Now two companies have announced G4 upgrades for these PowerBooks, available in July: PowerLogix offers the BlueChip G4, the resurrected Newer Technology names its upgrade NuPowr Pismo 500 G4. The 500 MHz fast PowerPC 7410/G4, which is being used on both upgrades, is only interesting for owners of the smaller Pismo G3/400 as long as raw clock speed is concerned, in AltiVec optimized applications as well as under MacOS X and its computing intense graphical user interface the G3/500 PowerBook will benefit as well. Both companies will take the complete PowerBook, solder the G4 chip, run a function test and then send the computer back to the customer. In both cases the customer will have to pay 299 US$ (PowerLogix will raise this price after an introductory period to 329 US$, which includes shipping both ways (in the US)). (PowerLogix)

Processor upgrades for G4 PowerMacs: For a long time there haven't been any faster processor upgrades. Now PowerLogix has announced a series of G4 accelerators for AGP based G4 PowerMacs: The PowerForce G4 Series 100 fits in Apples "AGP Graphics" (G4/350, G4/400, G4/450) and "Gigabit Ethernet" machines (G4/400, G4/450DP, G4/500DP) as well as in the PowerMac G4 Cube (G4/450, G4/500), while the PowerForce G4 Series 133 (133 MHz bus) has to be plugged in one of the following machines: "Digital Audio" (G4/466, G4/533, G4/533DP, G4/667, G4/733), "QuickSilver" (G4/733, G4/800DP, G4/867) or "QuickSilver 2002" (G4/800, G4/933, G4/1000DP). The very first G4 Macs (PCI graphics slot, "Yikes" motherboard) are not included since they have a ZIF CPU socket, just like the beige and b&w G3 PowerMacs (fastest ZIF upgrade to date is a G4/550). The PowerForce G4 Series replaces Apples original CPU module, everybody should be able to swap the modules within a few minutes. PowerLogix uses the PowerPC 7455 (G4 "Apollo", 256k onchip L2 cache, not pin compatible with the ZIF socket) with different configurations of external L3 cache and clock rates between 750 and 1000 MHz. The pricing ranges from 449 to 749 US$, the "100 Series" will be available in July, the "133 Series" in August. (PowerLogix)

In Mengen ab 1000 Stück kostet der Athlon XP 2200+ 241 US$. (AMD)

AMD Athlon XP 2200+: Today AMD introduced its first Athlon XP processor which is based on the new "Thoroughbred" core. Still the chip features 128k L1 and 256k onchip L2 cache, the front side bus still runs at 133 MHz (Double Data Rate 266 MHz), but now the processor is manufactured using a 0.13 instead of a 0.18µm process. The 1.8 GHz processor performs roughly on the level of a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4 ("QuantiSpeed" 2200+). In quantities of 1000 units it costs 241 US$. (AMD)

(Heise Newsticker)

Details on AMD K8/Hammer: AMDs 64 bit processor generation K8 "Opteron" (codenamed "Hammer") is scheduled to hit the market in the first half of 2003. Microsoft already announced it will support this CPU -- for the time being most probably only with a server system, since Microsofts "Windows XP 64 Bit Edition" is ment for Intels IA-64 architecture (Itanium).
Opteron will be based on two cores: "Sledgehammer" offers support for systems running 2 to 8 CPUs, "Clawhammer DP" will run in dual processor machines and "Clawhammer" (without "DP", probably still marketed under the "Athlon" brand) for single processor computers. Like the K7/Athlon family all Hammer CPUs will sport 64k of instruction and 64k of data cache (128k L1). Some models are said to host up to 1MB of onchip L2 cache. The instruction set adds AMDs x86-64 instructions as well as SSE2 ("MMX") of Intels Pentium 4. Hammer gets a dual channel DDR-SDRAM interface and 3 HyperTransport channels to connect to AMDs 8000 series chipsets. Opteron will be manufactured in Dresden (Germany) in a 0.13µm process, and it will also feature IBMs "Silicon On Insulator" technology (SOI). (Heise Newsticker (german))
