Puma, Jaguar and Panther benchmarks: We've updated our series of Mac OS X benchmark scores. The results span from OS X 10.1.5 to 10.3.1, where we measured the time required for booting and logging in, for launching and relaunching some apps, ripping a song from an audio CD, the framerate of iTunes' visualizer in fullscreen mode and behind a transparent terminal window, the framerate in Quake 3 and the Pentium processor emulation in Virtual PC. In most tests, the new 10.3 "Panther" system is in quite good shape.

(AMD)

AMD Opteron reaches 2.2 GHz: AMDs 64bit processor family Opteron gets a speed bump of 200 MHz to 2.2 GHz. This is valid for all family members, namely the Opteron 148 for single processor computers, the 248 for dual machines and the 848 for servers with 4 or 8 CPUs. OEM pricing is 733, 913 and 3199 US$. The new processors also support PC-3200R Registered DIMMs (DDR400 in pairs). (AMD)

(Intel)

Celeron Mobile at 2.5 GHz: Intels low end notebook processor Celeron Mobile got another speed bump of 100 MHz to 2.5 GHz. Compared to its predecessor only the clock speed and the OEM price (149 US$) have changed, compared to its desktop cousin it still features a twice as big onchip L2 cache (256k vs. 128k). The new Mobile consumes up to 35 Watts of power, in contrast to the Mobile Pentium 4 (512k onchip L2 Cache) it doesn't have a power saving technology ("SpeedStep"). At 2.4 GHz the Mobile Pentium 4 consumes more than 60 Watts, clocked down to 1.6 GHz (battery mode) it's less than 30 Watts. Intels latest Mobile processor family, the Pentium 4 M ("Centrino") with 1MB of onchip L2 cache, performs at 1.7 GHz at a similar level as a Mobile Pentium 4 at 2.4 GHz, but it consumes only 25 Watts maximum (12 Watts clocked down using SpeedStep). (Intel)

06.11.2003:

(Intel)

Intel Celeron reaches 2.8 GHz: Intels low end processor now tops at a clock speed of 2.8 GHz (2.7 GHz before); no other technical changes have made it into the chip: Only 128k onchip L2 cache (25% of the Pentium 4 L2 cache size), the quad-pumped system bus still runs at only half of the Pentium 4 bus speed (400 MHz instead of 800 MHz), and there's still no HyperThreading technology implemented. Under heavy load the new chip draws up to 68.4 Watts of power, an amount comparable to the one of the more powerful Pentium 4 (82 Watts at 3.2 GHz). But its price is relatively low, it sells for 117 US$ (OEM pricing in quantities of 1000 units) compared to the fastest Pentium 4 (3.2 GHz) at 417 US$. (Intel)
