New Apple iPod models, and cheaper: Additionally to the 4GB iPod mini Apple now sells a 6GB model (199 or 249 US$/EUR); the regular iPod is only available with 20GB harddisk (299 US$/EUR; optional as "U2 Special Edition", 349 US$/359 EUR). The iPod photo is still available with 60GB (449 US$/EUR), but also with a slimmer, lighter 30GB disk (349 US$/359 EUR); up to now the smaller of the two iPod photo could store up to 40GB of data.
Late March there will be an optional iPod Camera Connector available (29 US$/EUR) which allows to download pictures from digital cameras directly to an iPod photo. (Apple)
(Intel)
New Pentium 4 family: Next to Intels 3xx, 5xx and 7xx processor series there's now a new 6xx family available. These CPUs are based on a "Prescott" core (0.09µm) with 2MB instead of 1MB onchip L2 cache and they feature Intels 64bit extension EM64T (for addressing up to 16GB of main memory), the memory protection extension "xD" ("eXecute Disable", also known as "NX"/"No eXecute"), and Intels power saving technology "Enhanced Intel SpeedStep". The new models are named "630", "640", "650" and "660" (3.0, 3.2, 3.4 and 3.6 GHz), pricing ranges from 224 to 605 US$ (OEM). The bus connection of all the 6xx processors is using an FSB800 (200MHz "quad-pumped").
The Pentium 4 "Extreme Edition" has also been upgraded, it's now running at 3.73 GHz (OEM price: 999 US$). In contrast to the new 6xx series chips it's communicating over an FSB1066 (266MHz "quad-pumped"); the enhanced SpeedStep technology is not present on the Extreme Edition. Compared to its 3.2 and 3.4 GHz predecessors (0.13µm) the new "Extreme" hosts more L2 cache (2MB vs 512k), but it "lost" the external 2MB L3 buffer. (Intel)
1514 US$.
(AMD)
AMD Opteron reaches 2.6 GHz: AMDs fastetst desktop processor, the Athlon 64 FX-55, has reached a clock speed of 2.6 GHz in last October, now AMDs server processors are catching up: Within the next six weeks the new CPUs for Single, Dual and 4/8-way machines will be shipped. They're called "Opteron 152, 252 and 852", OEM pricing is 637, 851 and 1514 US$. The new Opterons get a new 0.09µm core, not only for the fastest 2.6 GHz models. Additionally they all support Intels SSE3 instructions, and the HyperTransport bus is now running at 1.0 GHz. Apples PowerMac G5 is also using a HT bus, it's running at up to 1.25 GHz per processor.
Despite the move from 0.13 to 0.09µm process AMD couldn't really lower the power consumption of the new Opteron processors, some draw a bit less and some a bit more power than their predecessors. For the top model at 2.6 GHz clock speed AMD specifies a maximum power consumption of 92.6 Watts ("Thermal Design Power", TDP). However, all the chip makers (including Intel and IBM) face the problem of increasing leakage current when moving to the small 90nm process, that's not an AMD specific problem. (AMD)
New Intel Xeons announced: Chip giant Intel has announced three new Xeon processors, they will hit the market within the next 90 days. Currently the Xeon "Gallatin" is Intels leading processor concerning cache size: it features 512k onchip L2 and up to 4MB L3 cache. The now announced new "Potomac" will double these figures to 1MB L2 and 8MB L3. This new chip, initially clocked at 3.66 GHz, will finally get a faster FSB667 connection (166 MHz quad-pumped, Gallatin: 4x 100 MHz). Potomac will be able to run in machines with up to four CPUs. The two announced smaller processors offer no L3 cache at all, "Cranford MP" will only have 1MB onchip L2, while "Irwindale" gets twice this size, 2MB L2. All three Xeons will support Intels EM64T, a 64bit extension to allow memory addressing of up to 16GB.
Concerning cache size, Potomac is not the biggest of them: Intels announced Dual Core Itanium2 "Montecito" will feature 1MB L2 and 12MB L3 per core, a total of 26MB cache. This results in an impressive transistor count: 1720 million of them will be on the chip -- Potomac in contrast will host only between 550 to 600 million transistors.
A comparison: IBMs 64bit PowerPC 970FX/G5 hosts 512k onchip L2 and no L3 cache, there are 58 million transistors on this chip, and 52 million on the PPC 970 (1st G5 generation). The PPC 970's big brother is IBMs POWER4(+), which features 1.5MB L2 and up to 32MB L3 cache -- however the L3 is located externally (off-chip) and is shared with other POWER4 processors, thus the chip hosts only 184 million transistors. The successor to the POWER4 is, of course, the POWER5; with 1.92MB L2 and 36MB externally located L3 cache it counts only 276 million transistors. Motorola/Freescales PowerPC 7457/G4 with 512k onchip L2 cache hosts 58 million, like IBMs PPC 970FX. However, Apple uses the simplified PPC 7447 in its Macintosh computers, "simplified" because it lacks the interface for external (off-chip) L3 cache, therefore the 7447's transistor count is "a bit less" than the 7457's (we couldn't find the correct figures). 08.02.2005: Cell Prozessor angekündigt: IBM, Sony und Toshiba haben an der International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) erste Details zum kommenden Cell Prozessor geliefert.
Cell processor announced: At the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) IBM, Sony and Toshiba have announced details on their coming Cell processor. There will be several operating systems available for this "Supercomputer On A Chip", it will also be used in the next PlayStation 3 gaming console. Using virtualization, a technology known from server processors, several operating systems can run in parallel on this chip. Pilot production is scheduled for this year at IBMs East Fishkill Fab (New York).
The Cell chip is based on a simplified 64bit POWER5 server processor with two cores. Attached are eight "Synergistic Processing Units" (SPU), each of them based on another POWER core. The two main cores have a total of 512k onchip L2 cache, each of the attached SPU another 256k, summing up to 2.5MB memory in all the processor. The SPUs don't use any kind of cache hierarchy, the get a direct connection to the memory, with up to 128 simultaneous transactions. For the core to core connection the Cell processor uses the "FlexIO" technology (running at 6.4 GHz), for memory access it relies on "eXtended Data RAM" (XDR, 3.2 GHz), both of them are technologies from Rambus. Thanks to this enormeous bandwidth -- about 100 GB/s, three times as much as nVIDIAs fastest GeForce 6800 Ultra graphics accelerator, for example -- the chip is said to deliver more than 256 GFlops.
The Cell prototype chip hosts 234 million transistors on an area of 221 mm2, is made in a 90µm SOI process ("Silicon On Insulator") and is said to have reached clock speeds of 4+ GHz in the labs. There's no information available on its power consumption, but the chip has ten temperature sensors (probably one per core) and is likely to get the ability to scale down both clock speed and core voltage, if necessary.
(Intel)
Intel Dual Core processors announced: At the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) Intel has officially announced to ship dual core desktop processors in Q2 this year. A mainstream CPU (codenamed "Smithfield") will come without Intels HyperThreading technology, while an "Extreme Edition" will have activated HT on each core, thus the two new processors will offer two or four logical processors to the operating system.
