(Intel)
New Xeons from Intel: Intels next server processor generation based on the "Core" architecture is due next month ("Woodcrest"), however, the chip giant has decided to release a last roll of "Netburst" Xeons (Pentium 4 architecture). The new DualCore "Dempsey" CPUs feature 2x 2MB onchip L2 cache and are made in a 0.065µm process. The new Xeons with clock speeds of 3.73 and 3.2 GHz support a 1066 MHz fast Front Side Bus (FSB1066), the 3.0 GHz model only supports an FSB667. The 3.2 GHz variant is also available in a Mid Voltage edition, designed to consume up to 95 instead of 130 Watts ("Thermal Design Power", TDP), the 3.0 GHz Xeon is also designed for 95 Watts TDP. The prices for the new "50xx" Xeons range from US$ 209 to 851. (Intel)
(AMD)
AMD introduces "AM2" generation: Intels archrival AMD has introduced a new generation of processors: Compared to the previous AMD CPU models the new AM2 features a DDR2 memory controller and hardware support for Virtualisation, named "Pacifica" (e.g. allows to simultaneously run several operating systems on one computer). The rest has been (more or less) left unchanged, the CPUs are still made in a 0.09µm process, contain the same processing units, the same Crossbar Switch (which connects the cores, the memory controller and the chipset) and still use the HyperTransport 2.0 bus system.
AMD introduces a total number of 28 AM2 processors, including the DualCore Athlon 64 FX (2x 1MB L2 cache), the DualCore Athlon 64 X2 ("Windsor", 2x 1MB or 2x 512k L2 cache), the SingleCore Athlon 64 ("Orleans", 512k L2 cache) and the Low End Sempron ("Manila", 256k or 128k L2 cache). The energy efficient models are marked with an "EE" in their name, some of them are also available in a small form factor ("SFF"). The AM2 Athlon FX is only available at a speed of 2.8 GHz (FX-62, max. 125 Watts, US$ 1031), the Athlon 64 X2 is running at speeds of 2.0 to 2.6 GHz (X2 3800+ to X2 5000+, 35 to 89 Watts, US$ 303 to 696), its SingleCore variant from 2.0 to 2.4 GHz (3200+ to 3800+, 35 to 62 Watts, US$ 138 to 290), and the Sempron from 1.6 to 2.0 GHz (2800+ to 3200+, 35 to 62 Watts, US$ 67 to 145). 16.05.2006: Das Intel iBook ist da: Als vorletzte Rechnerfamilie hat Apple jetzt das iBook durch eine Intel befeuerte Generation abgelöst: Das neue MacBook kommt mit 1.83 oder 2.0 GHz schnellem Core Duo Prozessor.
(Apple MacBook)
The Intel iBook is here: Apple has moved the last but one of its computer families to the Intel processor architecture: The iBook has been replaced by the new MacBook. This new laptop is equipped with an Intel Core Duo processor running at 1.83 or 2.0 GHz. It features a 13.3" widescreen TFT (glossy) and is coming in a white enclosure, however the 2.0 GHz model is also available in black. In many aspects the MacBook moves closer to the MacBook Pro: SuperDrive with DoubleLayer media support (2.0 GHz model only), Gigabit ethernet, video out as mirroring or extended desktop, no modem anymore, "MagSafe" power plug, analog/digital-optical audio IN/OUT, built-in iSight camera and infrared sensor, Apple Remote remote control.
The PowerPC based iBooks and the 12" PowerBook (PowerPC) aren't anymore. The 15.4" MacBook Pro laptops get a speedbump of 167 MHz for free (now 2.0 and 2.16 GHz). The only remaining Apple PowerPC computer is the PowerMac G5. (Apple MacBook)

Intels next Core generation: This July Intel will introduce its next microarchitecture. Officially it will be called "Core 2 Duo". Compared to the current architecture a "2" has been added to its name, representing the 2nd "Core" generation. The Core 2 Duo processors for desktops has been codenamed "Conroe" while the next CPU for notebooks has been known as "Merom". Similar to the old Pentium 4 line there will also be an extremely powerful and extremely expensive "Extreme Edition" ("Core 2 XE").
The naming of the new CPUs will start with a letter, classifying the power consumption ("Thermal Design Power", TDP): "E" for 55-75 Watts, "T" for 25-55 Watts, "L" for Low Voltage processors (15-25W) and "U" for the Ultra Low Voltage chips (<15W). This letter is followed by four digits, representing the processor family plus a relative performance index (based on clock speed, number of cores and size of L2 cache).
(Intel)
Intels Pentium D reaches 3.6 GHz: The "Presler" dual-core in Intels new Pentium D 960 processor is clocked at 3.6 GHz (0.65µm, 2x 2MB onchip L2 cache), 200 MHz faster than in the previously fastest D-model 940. Interestingly Intel has increased the maximum power consumption TDP ("Thermal Design Power") from 95 to 130 Watts, that's a plus of almost 37%. The new chip sells for 530 US$ (OEM pricing), the previous "D" types have been lowered in price by 13 to 50% -- the Pentium D is still based on the old "NetBurst" architecture of the Pentium 4, while Intels next generation architecture is due to ship in a few weeks: "Woodcrest" for smaller servers in June, "Conroe" for desktops in July and "Merom" (successor to "Yonah"/CoreSolo/CoreDuo) for notebooks in August.
