Finally new processor upgrades available: After a long break there are finally some new Mac processor upgrades appearing. Since the most recent G4 processors (PPC 745x and 744x) are no longer pin compatible with their predecessors (they're installed in older Macs), the upgrades host older CPU versions. Motorola is offering the PowerPC 7410/G4 ("Nitro") with speeds up to 533 MHz (PowerLogix is overclocking it to 550 MHz), and IBMs PPC 750/CXe ("Anaconda") reaches its limit at 700 MHz -- currently only the 600 MHz version is used in upgrades. However, these upgrades may boost old machines by a significant factor. A PowerMac G3/233 runs a lot faster with a G4/550 installed, and early iMacs can be boosted well over twice its original clock speed using Sonnets HARMONi 600 (which also adds a FireWire port). Remember that upgrading the CPU is only one step of improving your computers performance; a fast processor runs (subjectively) better in a system with lots of memory and faster harddisk and graphics accelerator.

Rund 65 Watt Strom soll AMDs Neuer typischerweise verbrauchen (max. 73W). In Mengen ab 1000 Stück kostet der Prozessor 420 US$. (AMD)

AMD Athlon XP with 1.73 GHz: AMD has introduced its Athlon XP 2100+ processor (real clock speed is 1.733 GHz). Except for the clock speed it's technically comparable to its predecessors: 128k L1 and 256k L2 cache, 266 MHz front side bus (FSB) speed. It typically draws 65 Watts of power (max. 73W). In quantities of 1000 units the new processor costs 420 US$. (AMD)

(Intel)

Intel Xeon MP: Intels dual processor capable Xeon DP (512k L2 cache) is on the market for a while, now the multi processor capable Xeon MP has been introduced at speeds of 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 GHz. This chip is based on the Pentium 4 "Foster" core and features 256k of L2 and 1MB or 512k L3 cache on the die. Pricing is comparable to earlier Xeons: The 1.6 GHz processor (1MB L3) costs 3692 US$, the 1.4 GHz (512k L3) sells for 1177 US$ (in quantities of 1000 units). (Intel)

    08.03.2002:

Pentium 4 Mobile is power hungry: It was to be expected, concerning power consumpion Intels new Pentium 4-M is not much different to its brothers of the Pentium 4 family. While the desktop Pentium 4 with 256k onchip L2 cache draws 75 Watts at 2.0 GHz this has been reduced to 55 Watts for the newer 2.2 GHz Chip with 512k onchip L2. The Pentium 4-M draws no less than 30 Watts at 1.7 GHz (1.3V core voltage) while the performance comparable 1.2 GHz Pentium III-M consumes only 22 Watts (1.4V core voltage), making it better suited for mobile computers.
Lets compare this to the PowerPC G4 family: Top runner is the 1.0 GHz PPC 7455, it draws 21.3 Watts, while it's smaller brother PPC 7445 (no L3 cache support, candidate for future PowerBooks) consumes only 10.3 Watts at 733 MHz. The PPC 7441, used in Apples current PowerBook G4, burns 11.4 Watts at 600 MHz (Apple ships machines running at 550 and 667 MHz). Believe it or not, the older PowerPC 7410/G4 used to consume no more than 5.3 Watts at 500 MHz, that's 10% of what Intels top CPU draws.

    04.03.2002:

1.13 GHz. (Heise Newsticker)

Pentium 4 Mobile is here: Sooner than expected Intel has introduced its Pentium 4 Mobile processor at speeds of 1.6 and 1.7 GHz. Like its brother for desktop computers the new chip is manufactured in a 0.13 Micron process and its onchip L2 cache is also 512k in size. The new i845MP chipset supports up to 1GB of DDR SDRAM. The core voltage has been lowered from 1.5 to 1.3 Volts, in SpeedStep mode (running on battery) the chip is clocked down to 1.2 GHz (1.2 Volts). The new Enhanced SpeedStep allows to switch clock speed regardless of which power supply the computer is running (battery of wall connect). The 1.7 GHz Pentium 4-M sells for 508 US$, the 1.6 GHz unit for 401 US$ -- these are exactly the same prices as for the Pentium III-M at 1.2 and 1.13 GHz. (Heise Newsticker (german))
