729 (4000+) US$ (OEM Preise). (AMD)
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 at 2.6 GHz: AMD has introduced the new Athlon 64 FX-55 processor running at 2.6 GHz and hosting (unchanged) 1MB of onchip L2 cache. Its predecessor, the FX-53 (2.4 GHz, 1MB onchip L2), is not available anymore, but: The new "normal" Athlon 64 4000+ features exactly these specifications, that means for the first time the regular Athlon 64 gets 1MB of onchip buffer. Both new processors are made in a 0.13µm process and sell for 827 (FX-55) and 729 (4000+) US$ (OEM pricing). (AMD)
(Heise Newsticker)
Pentium 4 at 4 GHz not appearing this year: According to the german Heise Newsticker chip giant Intel has canceled its plans to release a 4 GHz fast Pentium 4 processor this year. The fastest currently available Pentium 4 chip clocks at 3.6 GHz. It's "Prescott" core (0.09µm) is said to get an onchip L2 cache increase from 1MB to 2MB soon, and this will probably form a new "6xx" processor family -- Intel currently offers its CPUs in "3xx", "5xx" and "7xx" series.
Intel also plans to accelerate the Front Side Bus (FSB) from currently 800 to 1066 MHz (266 MHz DDR over two channels, that is 2x2x266 MHz "quad-pumped"). Also, some announced technologies will be released: "Clackamas" Technology (CT, "EM64T" Extended Memory 64 Technology), comparable to AMD64 extension to address more memory (64 bit wide, in some Xeon processors already available); "Vanderpool" Technology (VT), hardware support for virtual machines; "LaGrande" Technology (LT), cryptographic access protection; "Hyperthreading" Technology (HT, already available) and soon processors hosting more than one core. (Sun Microsystems)
Sun UltraSPARC IV+: At the "Fall Processor Forum" in San Jose (California) Sun Microsystems has announced the successor of its UltraSPARC IV dual core processor: The UltraSPARC IV+ (codenamed "Panther") will also host two processor cores, debut at 1.8 GHz (IV: max. 1.2 GHz), have 2MB of onchip L2 cache (IV: 1MB onchip L2 or 2x8MB off-chip L2 cache (8MB per core = 16MB)) and an interface for up to 32MB of external L3 cache (not possible with UltraSPARC IV). The chip will be manufactured by Texas Instruments in a 0.09µm copper process, it will contain around 300 millions transistors (IV: 66 millions) and consume up to 90 Watts of power. Market schedule is mid of 2005. (Sun Microsystems)
