(Apple)

Over a dozen new processors from Intel: By the end of October, Intel is said to have introduced more than 13 new Pentium III chips for desktop and mobile PCs as well as workstations and servers. The flood of chips will begin late September when Intels 820 chipset will be released - it supports a faster system bus (100 and 133 MHz), high-bandwidth Rambus Dynamic RAM (RDRAM), a 4X Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) and Multithreading (hardware). The Pentium III processor will come at speeds of 533 and 600 MHz while running on a 133 MHz bus (and still be manufactured at 0.25 micron). Later there will follow six PIII processors codenamed "Coppermine", which will be manufactured using a 0.18 micron process - that will help to reduce power consumption and heat production (see our Power Consumption Chart for current processors). Using 0.18 micron there will be some room left to integrate 256k L2 cache (presumably clocked 1:1) on the die - the Celeron processor already features 128k of integrated cache, and the mobile PII has 256k. The CPU clock speed of PIII/Coppermine will start at 500 MHz and go up to 550, 600, 650 and 667 MHz (possibly 700 MHz). The high end processor PIII/Xeon is expected to ship at speeds of 600 and 667 Mhz. Additionally there will be introduced three Pentium III Mobile processors running at 400, 450 and 500 MHz, and this will mean a shift from 66 to 100 MHz bus speed in mobile Intel based computers. The PIII Mobile will not ship with Geyserville technology before Q1/2000. Geyserville reduces CPU clock speed if the Notebook is running on battery power. A 650 MHz PIII Mobile featuring Geyserville is expected in Q1/2000 (650 MHz when plugged in, not using battery power). Intels competitor AMD has announced a 700 MHz K7/Athlon processor for Q4 this year. (Excite)
We'll probably hear some news on the PowerPC platform (faster G3 and/or introduction of G4) today at the Seybold conference keynote, which will be held by Steve Jobs. (Apple)

Athlon SPECmarks: We've updated our SPECmark95 page. From now on we're only tracking PEAK scores (compiler optimization allowed) since that's what most chip makers publish (the BASE scores may be significantly lower). There's a famous exception: AMD has published SPECmarks for the first time, but they're only BASE scores for its Athlon K7 processor - which are much higher than the PEAK of a PowerPC 750/G3 or Intel Xeon server chip. But do not forget: There's no such thing like a global benchmark for indexing overall performance of a system. Each test only measures its own tasks, not more. Also the SPECmark95 is quite outdated. (K7/650 SPECmarks are not yet published)

(Golem NN)

Intel stopps development of graphics chip: There are some fields where even giants have no chance. That's what Intel had to realise in the market of graphics chips. Their i740 and i752 could compete only for a short period of time against the powerful counterparts from 3Dfx, ATI, NVIDIA and S3, and did not gain any market share. Intel also ceases development of the i754 (which was never released) and the notebook graphics chip "Mont Blanc". Intel will continue to produce chipsets with integrated graphics processors (like the Intel 810 and 811), but they target low end PCs. (Golem NN)

Windows NT without RISC platform: According to the german news magazine c't Compaq stopps its efforts of keeping up Windows NT (this includes Windows 2000) on the Alpha platform - but only the 32 bit version is affected, there will still be a 64 bit NT for alpha. Some time ago NT projects on the PowerPC and MIPS architecture were canceled because Microsoft showed only poor engagement (late or never updated office and server applications). A DEC/Compaq insider said, NT was installed only on few of the total 500'000 Alpha machines. (c't (german))

Prost Neujahr. (c't)

Microsoft and year 2000: Currently Microsoft ships a "Year 2000 Resource CD". Included are HTML pages with lots of Y2K related info on their products. The starting page contains a day counter to the year 2000 - which fails after day zero (example from the german news magazine c't: There are -693559 days left from April 29th 2000 to 1.1.2000) (c't (german))

HP upgrade path bypasses Merced chip: According to News.com HP does not think Merced will be ready soon and have enough performance to justify a processor switch in computer architecture. HP is co-designer of the "Intel Architecture 64 (Bit)" (IA-64) and recommends that some customers bypass Merced, the first IA-64 processor, and wait for the next one (McKinley). HP will sell IA-64 based computers in the future, but in the mean time there are at least four additional generation of its own PA-RISC processor series planned (PA-RISC 8600 to 8900). Silicon Graphics (SGI) also has plans to stop its MIPS processor series in favor of IA-64. HP, IBM, Compaq, Dell, SGI and others all plan to sell servers using the chip. Sun Microsystems will port its Solaris operating system to IA-64, but its own servers will continue to use Sun UltraSparc chips. First Merced prototypes may be ready in two or three weeks. Software written for HP PA-RISC systems will run on IA-64 systems without having to be modified. (News.com)

G3/500 in Kürze?

G3/500 soon? The german hardware manufacturer phase 5 digital products has announced to ship 500 MHz fast G3 upgrades featuring 1MB of 2:1 backside cache in September. The Power Booster G3 500 for G3 Macs (boards Gossamer and Yosemite) will cost 1599 DM, the Maccelerate!-750/500 for upgradeable 604 machines (boards Tsunami, Nitro and TNT) will ship for 1699 DM. The latter will run on a 50 MHz bus since the processor supports up to multiplier X10.0. It seems IBM and/or Motorola will soon announce faster G3 processors officially (current max speed is 466 MHz). (phase 5 - pages not updated)

(Total Impact)

8-way multiprocessing from Intel: Next week Intel will release the Profusion chip which allows 8-way multiprocessing. The previous limit from Intel was four processors, although individual vendors have implemented proprietary architectures that scale up to 64 processors (not very popular because they were proprietary). Also next week Compaq will release a server machine with 8 Pentium III/Xeon 550 processors installed (each having 1MB 1:1 backside cache), 9GB harddisk size (max. 380GB internally) and 2GB RAM (max. 16GB) - for a price of about 80'000 US$. Microsoft has announced it will optimize "Windows 2000 Advanced Server" to 8-way MP, "Windows 2000 Data Center" from 16 to 32 CPU processing, "Windows 2000 Server" from 2 to 4-way, only "Windows 2000 Professional" (desktop/consumer OS) will stay at single to dual processor machine level. (Techweb on Profusion, Techweb on Windows 2000)
In the aera of the PowerPC 604(e) processor the Mac used to support 2 or 4 CPUs. Actually they were not supported by the MacOS but by applications like PhotoShop (using a special MP plugIn). Since the current G3 processor (PowerPC 750) was derived from the not MP capable 603(e) the G3 does not work in cooperation with others of his kind. We'll have to wait for the G4 (derived from the 604e core), it will support MP. But there already exists an exception: Total Impact from California offers the "Total Power MP/G3", a PCI board containing 1 to 4 G3 processors, each having 512k or 1MB of backside cache and up to 512MB SDRAM per board. You can even connect several boards together using their "Power Box". The applications you want to run have to be modified (programmed) using Total Impacts special API. (Total Impact)

Pentium III/600 Hitzeprobleme?
(Toms Hardware)

Heat problems in Pentium III/600 systems? In its comparison review on AMDs K7 Athlon and Intels Pentium III processor Toms Hardware notes that a lot of people are reporting heat induced system crashes of Pentium III/600 machines. "... you start wondering if the release of PIII 600 was some kind of desperate move of Intel to save it from major embarrassment." Intel seems to have used the old overclocker trick of raising the core-voltage a little bit to keep up with the 600 MHz AMD processor. The K7, which is now also available at a speed of 650 MHz, performs better than the PIII at the same speed. If there's really a heat problem Intels trick didn't work the way it should have.
At 600 MHz (K7 & PIII) Toms Hardware measured a K7 performance advantage of more than 10% in office applications, 14% to 36% in 3D games and 45% in rendering (here only 3D Studio Max was tested). (Toms Hardware)

AGP Pro-Slot findet man z. Z. in keinem Mac). (CHIP Online)

Graphics Accelerator board with up to 1GB memory: The graphics accelerator board maker NumberNine and the chip specialist PixelFusion have announced to develop a high end graphics board for the AGP Pro slot (which is currently not present in Macs). It will be based on the Fuzion 150 processor from PixelFusion (0.25 micron, 70 millionen transistors, most of them used for the integrated 24 MBit / 3MB DRAM), which is said to be the first using Rambus RDRAM modules as video memory. First tests seem to have shown more than twice the performance of todays solutions. The product will be available in the first half of next year at a yet unknown price and will ship with 128MB up to 1GB video memory. Compare these values to the 16MB (max. 32MB) of an ATI Rage 128 in the b&w G3 Macs (current x86 machines don't have more than this). (CHIP Online)

(InfoWorld Electric)

IBM PowerPC plattform for Linux: IBM Microelectronics Division is offering for free the design for a PowerPC motherboard that runs Linux as a way to seed the market for PowerPC systems. IBM will not charge license fees or royalties from OEMs. The reference design uses industry standard components, much of the technology in x86 motherboards (exception: PowerPC chip) and fits into the standard ATX motherboard case. IBM won't make the motherboards, they just created the prototypes. Possible end users will be people who do not want an x86 machine and don't want to buy a more expensive Macintosh computer. IBM doesn't think Apple will have any objection since Linux customers are targeted, not Mac users. A success will increase the number of sold PowerPC processors and reduce their manufacturing costs and the price, and this is also good for Apple. (InfoWorld Electric)

Intel Celeron Mobile 433/466: Due to some problems with the Pentium III Mobile processor Intel announced the Pentium II based Celeron Mobile to ship on September 15th running at 433 and 466 MHz. Then the cheap Celeron processor (128k 1:1 L2 cache) will be faster than the more expensive Pentium II Mobile (256k 1:1 L2 cache), which runs currently at 400 MHz and will not be speed bumped. The Pentium III Mobile is announced to ship in October. (Excite)
AMD, Intels direct competitor, ships the K6-2-P running at 400 MHz and the K6-III-P running at 380 MHz. Theoretically one could use the PowerPC 750 (G3) running at 466 MHz in a PowerBook since it hit the market in February, but neither Apple nor an upgrade maker currently offers this option.

10.08.1999:

Die Preise in Mengen ab 1000 Stück: 249 US$ (500 MHz), 449 US$ (550 MHz), 615 US$ (600 MHz), 849 US$ (650 MHz).
(AMD)

AMD K7/650: AMD will ship the 650 MHz variant of its K7 "Athlon" processor sooner than planned, PC makers will get the first chips within the next days. Pricing in quantities of 1000: 249 US$ (500 MHz), 449 US$ (550 MHz), 615 US$ (600 MHz), 849 US$ (650 MHz).
Looking at the 650 and 600 MHz shipping from AMD and Intel leaves one question: Where is the PowerPC? The G3 is running at 466 MHz for a while now (end of February '99), and there are only few people who have seen a G4 with their own eyes. IBM and Motorola, the PowerPC developers, have never made any spectacular announcements weeks before the introduction of new products - in contrast to x86 developers like Intel and AMD (direct competition market) - that's why no official release date for the next PowerPCs is known. (Techweb)

IBM Power4: IBM's server group will detail the Power4 CPU for RS/6000 workstations and servers at the Hot Chips conference later this month. The Power4 is the first IBM processor design to include two processors and an L2 cache on the same die, it will feature copper interconnectors and be manufactured with a 0.18 micron process. Like the Power3, the Power4 has two floating-point units per processor core, or four FPUs per die. When the chip will hit the market in 2001 it will run at speeds of more than a GigaHertz using a system bus of 500 MHz. The Power4 can be used to create 32-way systems (16x Power4). (Techweb)

(Vimage Corp.)

Vimage Corp. OEM partnership: The US based company Vimage Corporation was selling processor upgrades (Vpower) from the japanese Interware Co. but now has stopped selling to individual users and resellers. It will only ship to OEM partners. If you own a Vpower G3 upgrade Vimage will grant you technical support. (Vimage Corp.)

(Techweb)

Pentium III Mobile delayed: Intel has some troubles getting its mobile Pentium III processor ready for market. The chip was scheduled for June, was then delayed until August and will possibly ship in October, analysts say. Currently Intel offers its Pentium II Mobile and Celeron Mobile (Pentium II core) both at a speed of 400 MHz, AMD ships its K6-III-P (portable) running at up to 380 MHz. There is no mobile version of the PowerPC 750 because this processor consumes less power than the mobile x86 chips. If there were processor upgrades for G3 PowerBooks available it would be possible to own a 466 MHz fast portable. See also our CPU power consumption page for an overview. (Techweb)

(PotzBits)

Mezzanine connector: The Mezzanine slot, electrically comparable to a PCI slot, is present only in iMacs of Revision A and B (233 MHz Bondi blue). Revision C and D have no connector, only the pins on the motherboard ("Columbus") are present. PotzBits from Augsburg (Germany) offers to add a Mezzanine connector for 250 DM (200 DM if you buy an iMac). Because the installation will void warranty PotzBits completes the term of guarantee. (Intel)

Intel Celeron 500: When introducing the Pentium III/600 Intel also launched the Celeron processor running at 500 MHz (see our news for August 4th). The chip is based on the Pentium II core, runs on a 66 MHz system bus and features 128k of 1:1 backside cache (the first two Celeron running at 266 and 300 MHz did not have any L2 cache). Again we've updated: SPECmark95, Top CPU page and MHz Timeline chart (which is also displayed using a logarithmic scale now). (Intel)

(Mac-The-Knife)

iMac successor soon? On August 15th, in less than two weeks, the iMac will celebrate its first birthday (yes, it's here for only one year!). Mac-The-Knife rumors that Apple will then show the iMacs successor codenamed "Kihei", which is said to feature FireWire and DV capabilities. Of course it would also be possible that a faster iMac (366 MHz) will be shown. (Mac-The-Knife)

(Intel)

Pentium III 600: Intel officially introduced the 600 MHz Pentium III processor. Identical to the Pentium II it still features 512k of backside cache (2:1 300 MHz) and it only runs on a 100 MHz system bus. Official benchmarks: SPECint95 = 24.0, SPECfp95 = 15.9 - we added these scores to our SPECmark page, the top CPU page and to our MHz Timeline chart (which is also displayed using a logarithmic scale now).
