(XAppeal)

More MacOS X Consumer screenshots: XAppeal listened to reader requests and posted more screenshots of the 2nd Developer Preview DP2 of MacOS X Consumer/Client. Among them is also a look into the "new system folder" which seems to be organized in a different way than in the current MacOS - there's a complete different technology (Unix) behind the surface. November). In Mengen ab 1000 Stück kostet der neue, nach 0.18 Mikron-Technologie (Aluminium) gefertigte Chip 799 US$. (AMD)

AMD K7/750: As previously announced AMD today introduced the 750 MHz K7 processor, this is the chip with the highest clock rate currently available (not counting the supercooled Athlons which run at up to 1 GHz). We didn't find any specs on the cache clock speed - according to a prerelease test done by the german c't the 750 MHz K7 sports a 5:2 (300 MHz) clocked backside cache instead of 2:1 (375 MHz), the c't states that this results in a relatively small performance gain over the 700 MHz predecessor with 350 MHz cache speed. AMD hasn't published any benchmark scores yet (see macinfo.de 11th November on the c't tests). In quantities of 1000 the new chip, which is manufactured at 0.18 micron (using Aluminium interconnectors), sells for 799 US$. (AMD)

no Yikes boards anymore: According to the german news site macnews.de Apple will ship the Power Macintosh G4/350 having a Sawtooth board too - the Yosemite derived Yikes board, which was inside the smaller G4 Macs, was made to be used before Sawtooth will be available in quantities. So now every customer buying a G4 machine of any configuration will benefit from faster 2XAGP graphics, stronger memory bridge, two USB controllers etc. - Apple didn't officially announce this board change, so we do not know when the last Yikes machine is sold. (c't Heise)

Demand for Intel Pentium III/Xeon going down: According to the german c't magazine the Intel server processor Xeon doesn't sell good. The Xeon was introduced together with the Pentium II. Compared to this chip the Xeon features a faster (1:1 instead of 2:1) and optionally larger cache (512k like the PII/III, 1MB or 2MB), it supports up to quad multiprocessing, and last but not least it costs more (according to c't a Xeon/500 is 15 times as expensive as a Pentium running at the same clock speed). The performance gain between Pentium II/III and Xeon is only at a low percentage (depending on the application), and it's even less between the new Pentium III/E (Coppermine) and the Xeon III/E, because the PIII/E features 256k of 1:1 cache and the Xeon is currently only available with the smallest cache size. Additionally the Intel 840 "Carmel" chipset (needed for the fast Rambus RDRAM) allows only single and dual multiprocessing, there's no option to run four CPUs. According to Intel Coppermine Xeons with larger caches will become available somewhen next year. HP doesn't sell any computer featuring Pentium III Xeon processors, and Dell is planning to offer them in the future, but not yet. (c't Heise (german))

(ISSCC 2000)

International Solid-State Circuits Conference 2000: At the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in February 2000 all important chip makers will preview their oncoming processors. Motorola will show the G4+ at a speed of 780 MHz, it will have 256k of integrated L2 cache (780 MHz 1:1) and supports up to 2MB of external L3 cache (2:1). Other improvements compared to the current G4 processor are: deeper pipelines (more stages allow higher clock rates), a 256 bit wide instead of a 64 bit wide bus to the external cache, 4 instead of 2 integer units, improved AltiVec units.
IBM will show a 660 MHz 64 bit PowerPC (having copper interconnectors and manufactured using the SOI technology), a 760 MHz G6 S/390 server processor and a Single-Issue 64 bit PowerPC running at 1 GHz. The most powerful CPU, the Compaq Alpha (previously belonged to DEC), will be shown running at 1 GHz, and Intel too will show a 32 bit processor at 1 GHz - here it's not clear whether this will be a Pentium III or a prototype of Intels next generation 32 bit CPU ("Willamette") having a new CPU core (P7), but the statement that it runs this fast at room temperature makes it more likely to be a new architecture (the Willamette). HP announced it will show a 600 MHz version of its powerful PA-RISC series. (ISSCC 2000)

(XLR8YourMac)

G3 vs. G4 vs. K7: Accelerate Your Mac has added PhotoShop run times of an AMD K7/600 to its review on the XLR8 G4/400Z upgrade (installed in a Power Macintosh G3 b&w). Also included in the review is a G3/400 b&w (board Yosemite), a G4/450 AGP (board Sawtooth) and the 450 MHz version of the tested G4/ZIF upgrade from XLR8 (in a G3 b&w Yosemite). The XLR8 G4/450 was even faster than the PowerMac G4/450, which has a faster memory bridge (115.4 = 100% vs. 117.6 seconds = 98.1%). The 400 MHz G4 ZIF upgrade installed in a G3 b&w machine needed 128.5 seconds (89.8%) to complete all 21 filters, the G3/400 needed 147.8 (78.1%) and the K7/600 138.7 seconds (83.2%). The higher clock rate of the x86 processor doesn't help much - but you have to be aware of the fact that PhotoShop only supports the AltiVec unit in the PowerPC G4 and MMX/SIMD in Pentium processors, AMDs 3DNow! technology is not boosting PhotoShop performance; a similar instruction set is completely missing in the G3 processor.

AMD K7/750 at the end of month: While Intel seems to have problems in shipping its Pentium III Coppermine processors at speeds of more than 600 MHz, its competitor AMD has announced the 750 MHz K7 processor for November 29th. AMD will ship a 800 MHz chip early 2000 - it's likely that Intel will introduce the PIII/800 sooner than previously announced (Q2/2000). Motorola is expected to ship its PowerPC 7400/G4 at speeds of 500 and 550 MHz in December or early January, probably right before the Macworld Expo. This processor (revision 2.8) won't have the data cache problem at speeds of 500 MHz and above anymore.

Keine schnellen Coppermines? (The Register)

No fast Coppermines? The british news magazine The Register has published an article on Intels new Pentium III Coppermine processors, and the author Mike Magee really has some critical words to say about Intel. The new processors (0.18 micron technology) have been introduced ways too early and are not shipping yet. The statement that Intel will ship "millions of Coppermines" this quarter is being relativated in the article: On a 8 inch wafer there's room for 250-275 chips, say 200 of them will work. Intel has to produce 10'000 wafers to get 2 million processors, and that's easily done within two weeks by only one of the four fabs - within a quarter one fab produces 60'000 wafers, this sums up to 240'000 wafers (48'000'000 chips) for four fabs. But Intel keeps on producing 0.25 micron processors. We don't want to name any reasons for that. But think about this: Intels strongest competitor AMD is really shipping the powerful K7/Athlon processor at speeds of up to 700 MHz - in contrast to the PIII/600-733 introduced on October 25th (almost a month ago).

(3dfx)

More than a billion pixels per second: 3dfx Interactive showed two new graphic card series and a new graphics chip generation at the Comdex exhibition. The new VSA-100 processor, which hosts more than 14 million transistors, can be combined with up to 31 others of his kind on a single graphics card. Its new 3D engine is built for high fillrates. It calculates 2 pixels per cycle, resulting in 333-367 million points per second. The new Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 boards host 16 to 128 MB of video memory and 1 to 4 VSA-100 chips, performing 333 to 1470 pixels per second - for comparison: an ATI Rage 128, used in current Macs, calculates about 250 million pixel/sec.
The Voodoo4/5 cards are optimized for computers running Intel Pentium or AMD processors and support DirectX, OpenGL and Glide. Voodoo4/5 PCI products for the Mac have been announced (incl. driver support), but it's not clear whether there will be any possibility to use the AGP versions in G4 Sawtooth Macs (according to Accelerate Your Mac! the "older" Voodoo3 3000 AGP works in Sawtooth systems).
The Voodoo4 4500 features 1 chip and 32 MB of video RAM, it will be available in a PCI and an AGP version (about 180.- US$ / 430.- DM). The Voodoo5 5000 PCI has 2 processors and 32 MB installed (about 230.- US$ / 550.- DM), the Voodoo5 5500 AGP has 2 processors and 64 MB RAM (about 300.- US$ / 700.- DM), the top card Voodoo5 6000 AGP hosts 128 MB video memory and 4 processors, it will cost about 600.- US$ / 1300.- DM. All products will be available early 2000. (3dfx)

(TechWeb, macinfo SPECmark Page)

Rambus DRAM vs. DDR SDRAM: Intel showed impressive SPECmark scores when introducing the Pentium III "Coppermine" processors at the end of October (but keep in mind that the SPECmark95 is an outdated test collection). The high results were scored using the Camino 820 chipset which is said to be available soon - the launch date was set for March but has been delayed twice since then. Camino works with RDRAM (Rambus Dynamic RAM), which transfers up to 1.6 GB/s. The more expensive 840 chipset will be able to control two channels, resulting in a transfer rate of 3.2 GB/s maximum. The SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) used in current PCs and Macs tops at 800 MB/s (0.8 GB/s). But here's also something going on. SDRAM-II, also know as DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate) or PC266 RAM, doubles the rate to 1.6 GB/s. There are rumors saying that Apple works on integrating PC266 RAM in future Macs. Note that these are all peak rates. In a TechWeb article several benchmarks are mentioned, all of them showed a DDR PC266 performance advantage; depending on the tests used the advantage ranged from 2.7% to over 30% - this again shows the relativity of benchmark scores. At next weeks Comdex Rambus will present its own benchmarks, and they will surely show an advantage for RDRAM. (TechWeb, macinfo SPECmark Page)

Transmeta Prozessor: Wann? (c't Heise)

Transmeta Processor: When? Rumors say that on the first day of Comdex (November 15th) Transmeta will announce the date when it shows its processor (codename Crusoe) to the public, currently people believe this will be January 19th 2000. Crusoe is a new processor concept, only a few details are known yet: Very simple hardware ("Morph Host") works together with emulation software (Code Morphing Software). Simple hardware designs can be clocked very high, and the emulation software is - according to Transmeta - capable of running any OS and any application. The big questions are whether this really works and how the system will perform. (c't Heise (german))

(c't Heise)

AMD K7/Athlon 750 MHz: The german online magazine c't has published preview benchmarks on AMDs oncoming 750 MHz Athlon processor. This chip is due December 13th, 800 MHz won't be released this year. On the K7/750 the L2 cache doesn't catch up with the core speed, so the 2:1 ratio used in previous processors (up to K7/700) had to be reduced to 5:2, leaving 300 MHz cache speed on the K7/750 (2:1 would be 375 MHz), that's less than the 350 MHz used on the K7/700. According to the c't benchmarks this leads to only 2-5% performance increase over a 700 MHz Athlon processor.
Intels new Pentium III (Coppermine) chips are only good performers if running on the Camino chipset (with Rambus memory) which is currently not available. c't also notes that PIII chips at speeds of 700 and 733 MHz are not shipping in quantities yet. (c't Heise (german))

(ZDNet)

Flexible Transistors from IBM: IBM has brought a lot of innovation to the chip market, like using Copper instead of Aluminium (copper interconnectors), isolating the circuits from the die (SOI - Silicon On Insulator) or using Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) to exceed the clock rate limit of the material currently used to produce chips. Now researchers at IBM Corp. have announced they managed to produce a cheap, thin and flexible transistor that can, for example, be sprayed on plastic to make displays that can be rolled up. However, this technology will not replace silicon chips, an IBM spokeswoman said. (ZDNet)
